this is kpix5 news on the cw. bay area paramedics grieving for a colleague. for a second time after a mystery shooting turns into murder. >> vacation interrupted. the offduty bay area police officer saved the day at airport security. and left in the trash and forgotten. the lucky litter of puppies rescued in the nick of time. i'm allen martin in for ken bastida. >> quinn has died two dais after someone shot him while he was driving in the oakland hills. as night, the search is on for the killers and his motive. kpix5's kristen ayers is at the crime scene. kristen. >> reporter: that's right, bower was a dublin resident. authorities announced today that he died around 4:00 today.

tonight here at the scene, people are leaving behind flowers at the very spot where his car plunged down a ravine moments after he was shot. black ribbon tied outside the santa clara ambulance station, along with flowers and stuffed animals. >> he was a great guy. he was an amazing paramedic. >> black bands over badges. all in tribute to santa clara county paramedic, quinn bower. bower was offduty visiting his father in the oakland hills tuesday when someone opened fire on his in his blue honda civic. quinn stepped on the gas and the car crashed. >> not only our company, but our community and the ems community as a whole. >> the shooting happened almost two years to the day that another paramedic at the same station, brian stowe, was left severely brain damaged after being beaten at a giants dodgers game. >> people are still dealing

with that horrible, tragic accident. for this to happen on top of it, it's just horrific. >> more horrific because there are so few answers. police are not saying whether the crime was random or bower was targeted as part of a robbery. bower's coworkers say all they can do is keep working, keep helping. >> it is hard to believe. some people, it has not clicked. we are in that shock mode. >> authorities investigating this is a homicide, but releasing very little information. they are not giving us any description about the suspect. back to you. >> kristen, such a tragedy. these people are committed to helping others and saving other people's lives and this family, really, paramedics had two major tragedies in the last few years. >> it's very tough. it's strange for them to be in

the situation where they deal with something they love. when it's personal, you have to imagine it's a lot tougher. >> absolutely. kristen, thank you. you can plows call the oakland police if you know anything about the shooting. there is a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. well, oakland cops are doing damage control. officers investigating an armed robbery at a downtown restaurant ended up opening fire and wounding a teenage boy. a chef told police that she was walking to her car after her shift last night when three guys rode up on bicycles, grabbed her bag and knocked her out. whether officers got there, a witness fingered a group of teenagers who was hanging out nearby. they went up to those teenagers and not long after that, a shot rang out. >> according to the officer's statement, he received a threat from one of the individuals and fired a single round at his

direction. >> the police chief isn't saying what that threat was. the bullet grazed the teenager use jaw. he's going to be okay. the victim told police the teenagers had nothing to do with the robbery. a vacation ended earlier than expected. he was headed to airport security when another traveler stepped out of line. way out of line. kpix5 shows us what happened next. >> offduty police corporal waits in line at the airport check point with his shoes off when this scene on the left of the screen unfolds. a woman knocks over a sign leading to the way and attacks a woman's security officer as he tries to stop her. rogers doesn't see anyone help, so he goes over a short wall and tackles the wall. he says he's a police officer and they hand him the handcuffs

to make the arrest. the video is the talk of the police department. >> i thought typical justin. he's always on duty and couldn't be prouder of him. he's always a cop. and he definitely did the right thing. >> rogers is a seven-year veteran of the force. he is the son of a retired police sergeant. when he nailed the honolulu suspect, rogers and his family were traveling back to the bay area from a vacation. after he gave police a statement, they boarded their plane on time. the tsa thanked rogers and the police department. psa joins the citizens of penole in saluting your heroic actions. >> police commander said he is not surprised at roger's actions. he says he did what is expected. he took decisive action and

acted appropriately. he is expected back on the job on monday. now do we know why that woman attacked a tsa agent? >> the tsa doesn't say, but they did say that she is charged with assault. >> hope everything at the wedding goes okay. >> yeah, watch out. >> prosecutors say that the driver who plowed into a san jose wal-mart on easter sunday definitely meant to do it because he has done it before. 33-year-old hamid was arraigned today on a list of charges, including attempted murder. witnesses say that he revved his engine before barreling into the store and started beating people with a metal club. he was also charged today in a december drive through at san jose convenience store. two workers there barely made it out of the way. the owner was stunned to hear it happened again. >> it confirms for us that this was intentional here.

he was on a mission to do serious damage and potentially serious harm to individuals. >> he is being held without bail and he'll be back in court next week to enter a plea. >> it's bad when you forget to take the trash out on trash day. what's worse, when you do take it out and they don't pick it up. that's what is happening in six bay area cities. a strike means no trash collection in fairfield, pacifica, half-moon bay, union city and fremont. in fremont is where kit doe is right now. kit. >> reporter: these trash cans you see behind me were supposed to get picked up this morning, but it didn't happen. fremont was added to that list of cities today. the bay area is caught in the middle of a labor dispute in what is a sympathy strike. as homeowners wheel their trash back into their homes, it's the latest trash talk. it doesn't look like you have a lot of room. >> we really don't.

we went downsize. we retired, too, so it's a tight squeeze anyway. >> dawn scott and her neighbors are on the brink of a smelly problem. a garbage strike hit fremont. it's going to be a long wait until the next pickup. >> this one is almost full. so i may have one more bag of something i can get in there, but hopefully i can make it one more week. >> workers are republic allied waste went on strike in youngstown, ohio, and ally dump trucks sat quiet as workers stayed home. both here and in cities across the bay area. the teamsters union issued a statement saying for more than a year now, republic has been trying to squeeze every last cent out of its workers by cheating them out of pay, raising their healthcare costs, and cutting their retirement benefits. >> is the city caught in the

middle of this cross fire? >> the city is the victim here. >> fremont mayor says it's not a crisis, yet. the city tried to get word out as quick as they could. and allied made automated phone calls to all its customers. >> no one in public office -- the division is garbage piling up on the streets. >> until the next pickup, dawn scott might have to find out the hungry scotts and raccoons. >> this could be a major disaster for everybody. and we tried reaching out to the garbage company, but no answer. we did hear that they sent a couple workers in from out of town to make sure they did pickups at critical locations like nursing homes and hospitals. kpix5. >> regular garbage pickup is expected to resume on monday. allied waste will collect any extra bags bags free of charge. the bay area neighborhood is seeing an increase in porch

thefts. more and more people in the east foothills of san jose are missing their mail. the thefts started months ago. >> i was expecting a check from american express for $800. when it didn't arrive, i called them and come to find out that the check had been cashed at mountain mike pizzaria. >> there's a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the mail thief. car thieves in southern california are getting clever. the man manages to break into that car without using any tools. police say it appears thieves are using a device that remotely unlocks the doors. that gadget is so advanced, police don't know what it is. checking bay area headlines, a pilot of the empty oil tanker that sideswiped the bay bridge may never work in california again. a state board voted to suspend guy's state pilot license and

could revoke it all together. he was piloting the 752-foot overseas rymar through heavy fog when it struck a bridge tower in january. >> president obama is back in washington tonight with democratic coppers replenished by bay area donors. the president left after two days and multiple fundraisers from san francisco. at two of the stops, protesters met the president with signs and chants in opposition to the keystone pipeline from canada. and facebook has unveiled new software for android phones. you can customize your home screen and see content from facebook and instagram. the software will be available for down load. at&t will begin selling phones preloaded that day. >> a story about abandoned puppies is now a happy tale of

rescue. this litter of six and three adult dogs were thrown away like trash. they were in a card board box, locked away in a shed in monterey county. the dog's owner has yet to come forward. if they do, they'll face several animal cruelty charges. but for now, man's best friends are doing much better. >> we see these types of cases a lot. we do encourage the residents that if they are moving and cannot take the animals with us, keep us in mind. they can bring their pets to us, no questions asked. we just want to get them some help. >> that applies to every county. the dogs are in protective custody. they are not available for adoption, but that's going to change. >> a huge explosion lights up the sky in oklahoma. what is fueling these flames. >> a warning sign weeks before the massacre. what the suspect told his

killed dozens of people. authorities say workers had in india, a building collapse killed dozens of people. authorities say workers had illegally been adding additional floors to a four story office building north of mumbai when the whole thing collapsed. rescuers still digging through that rubble. so far, 27 are dead. about twice that number injured. and in oklahoma, a natural gas compressioner stadium exploded. everyone within a mile of that plant has been evacuated. no word yet on what caused it. two more states have passed stricter gun laws in the past 24 hours. maryland became the first state in decades to require gun

buyers. the new law also limits ammunition magazines to ten rounds and in connecticut, a state still grieving after the newtown school massacre. the governor signed legislation expanding the assault weapons ban. it limits the sale or purchase of high capacity magazines and requires background checks on buyers. and the man charged with killing 12 people inside a colorado movie theater was having homicidal thoughts weeks before the shooting. the psychiatrist treating james holmes says he told her that more than a month before the attack. dr. lynn fenton told police that holmes intimidated her. prosecutors will seek the death penalty. a new breed of crime fighters face an unusual conflict in southern california. the man that they were trying to arrest is suing them. reporter, richard allen on the confrontation at the center of the suit. >> dressed in pink and

brandishing weapons. these women burst into an arby's last month, trying to take daniel duval into custody after his bail bond was revoked. >> we're not going to be like all, sir, please stand up. that's not how it happens in the real world. eventually chasing him out of the restaurant, hitting him with pepper spray and rubber bullets while video taping the confrontation. >> blinded him. >> san diego attorney is representing duval who he says still can't see out of one eye. he is filing a multimillion lawsuit against the bounty hunter as well as others. g felony, assault and battery. simple as that. >> duval out on bond was being sought because he failed to pay $4,000 he owed a bail bonds company. they then hired the lipstick

bounty hunters who are blasting the allegations that he used excessive force. >> we are allowed to use enough force to effect an arrest. well we did not effect the arrest because he got away. >> duval did not get away for long. tuesday night, the lipstick bounty hunters tracked him down and took him into custody. >> it was a setback for him to be arrested. the way they did it proves my case. >> richard allen reporting. in the meantime, duval is free once again. >> i want to get straight to the tornado that you just confirmed. >> it was amazing. on kpix5, that nasty cell own the north half. it does confirm a tornado did touch down in the red bluff area, but no injuries, nobody was hurt and it was just mome tearily a touchdown. otherwise, the last time we saw

a funnel cloud in the sky was on february 20 of this year. now let's call inour live radar. it's in search of any kind of activity at all. right now we are dry. upstream, plenty of rain showers streaming across the north western quadrant. we see light snow and sleet mixture and throughout the national forest. i was picking up a little bit of lightning activity. but since this is live data, it seemed to have ceased at this time. today, nearly an inch of rain and .15 in san jose and liver more. our highs were substantially cooler than yesterday. gilmore cooled with 60 degrees. currently 50s and 60s across the board. the winds are out of the west. tonight, we will see a blanket of cloud cover, into the 40s and into the 50s. when you need to know about right now, foggy conditions at
